Souls : Playlist

soundtrack to your story

Like Evolve, and every other story that I write, Souls has music that shaped the story, action and characters.

I have a soundtrack for everything I do, it has a strong effect on my emotions .

I write, partially because I want the story out of my head, primarily because I want people to feel things: excitment, sorrow, fear.

Songs do that to me, so they run in parallel with my stories. Souls is no exception.

The relationship between the music and the story is so intertwined I’m never quite sure which came first and which is dominant.

The song that chimed with Souls is Borther by Kodaline 2017.

Although the song was released before I started writing Soul, I was writing Agents before 2017. And, like I’ve said before Souls was going to be an instalment in the Agents series. But the story that is now Souls, changed the overall Agents story line too much.

The music video and song tell two different stories. Which I find a little confusing. Whilst the video really tugs on the heartstrings, it’s somewhat out of sync with the messages in the song. Especially some of the lyrics. So, don’t consider their music video when thinking about Souls – listen to the lyrics.

Souls will finish at around 10k words – so, a short story. Brother is the only song that I have associated with Souls.

Like the other songs that shaped my other stories, I pretty much listened to Brother on repeat whilst writing the relevant parts.

The song fed my emotions; my emotions fed the characters; the characters fed the story.

Here are the lyrics that really chime with the story… and raise some questions when watching their music video.

When we were young we were the ones. The kings and queens oh yeah, we ruled the world. We smoked cigarettes man no regrets. Wish I could relive every single word

We’ve taken different paths. And travelled different roads. I know we’ll always end up on the same one when we’re old. And when you’re in the trenches. And you’re under fire I will cover you.

If I was dying on my knees. You would be the one to rescue me. And if you were drowned at sea. I’d give you my lungs so you could breathe.

Oh brother, we’ll go deeper than the ink beneath the skin of our tattoos. Though we don’t share the same blood you’re my brother and I love you that’s the truth. We’ve taken different paths. And travelled different roads. I know we’ll always end up on the same one when we’re old.

And if we hit on troubled water. I’ll be the one to keep you warm and safe. And we’ll be carrying each other. Until we say goodbye on our dying day
